The TVA has backed the flows down on both the South Holston and Watauga rivers. You had to get a long drag free drift and mend well ahead of your targeted fish. Both rivers are fishing great! The fishing has been awesome and just keeps getting better. Long leaders, light tippet, small natural looking flies. You can expect to have to chase a 16″ fish because he is running you into your backing. The schedule will tell when the best times to fish the river are, depending on whether you are wading or fishing from a drift boat. On the South Holston river the sulphurs are coming off good on high water. I’m sure that most of you already know about the work that is taking place at South Holston dam. The South Holston river is running the generators, which means the float trips have been fantastic. We waded the South Holston yesterday after the water dropped out. South Holston on low water has been on great. Both rivers have been good. If you have a boat, head over to the South Holston. Although there were midges all over the surface, we did best subsurface with size 20 stripper midges. The river is home to 11,000 brown trout per mile. The Watauga river has been giving up some nice fish lately. A few blue wings, some small caddis, and several midges. It is unbelievable how much trash that people throw into the river. Currently the TVA is sluicing South Holston dam at 1700cfs. We had low water in the morning, about a 2 hour pulse mid morning, falling water around lunch, and a high water flow of 1700cfs in the afternoon. Even though the weather is cold, the fishing is hot. The TVA is still generating on both the South Holston River and the Watauga River. No hatches to really speak of. Don’t forget that the 2 spawning areas of the South Holston river are now closed, and will be until February 1st. The low water nymph fishing has been off the charts! Both South Holston and Watauga have been high water for the last month. We are still seeing low water in the mornings and high water after noon on both the South Holston and Watauga rivers. The hatch got started between 2:30 and 3:00. The rivers are clear and fishing well. A sulphur comparadun with a dun colored wing was the best.
