Many, many farms with corn and soy bean fields. On Thursday we rode from Tingler Rd trailhead to Richmond and back-15M. In late September, 2005 we rode twenty miles of the trail starting in Muncie, and then two weeks later on our way back from the east coast, we rode the section in Richmond. TEST ROAD The route parallels US 35 so trailhead access is easy, with plenty of rest stops,
though only a few have water available, so bring a good supply to start. There are plans however to connect the Marion section of greenway to the West and the Sweetser Switch trail, which they then plan to extend West to Converse IN., it should be quite a fun ride once it is done "Rode the 27-mile paved section from Losantville (southern terminus of pavement) to Gaston (northern terminus of pavement) via Muncie on Labor Day, 2007. They just added a gate here and the sign says its closed dusk to dawn, so if you park your car there be sure to be out of there by nightfall so you dont get locked in. Richmond / Wayne County Indiana has several great micro breweries and unique wineries! We are planning to ride again only when the weather is drier. I did not know about the trail until one of the wedding party informed me of its existence. I think that not converting any of the old railways to useful recreational pathways is going to be a terrible loss. The Prairie Creek Reservior is close to the trail between Medford and Blountsville if you'd like to see a boats and visit a beach! We stayed at the Holiday Inn at Richmond IN. There are a few out there in remote areas and I have seen it for myself when riders try to slide by the stop sign, just remotely slowing down, accidents happen. My wife and I recently rode the Cardinal Greenway. Sweetser has a picturesque depot stopping point and the trail has been maintained very nicely, but only one restaurant is available but there are no shops to invite you to stop and browse (unlike the Monon in Carmel and Broad Ripple). As a Hoosier, I know that there can be some pretty boring and desolate places, so I was pleased to find the tree canopy as prolific as those I've seen in Michigan. This trail is a lot bigger than the site currently shows. The trail is currently open from CR 500 South to CR 534 East. Would do it again in a second! The next morning I woke up with welts all over my forehead, neck and shoulders. Very enjoyable! The trail is well protected from the wind for the most part and the grade never goes over 1%. while the scenery is not spectacular, it affords one good views of crops being harvested (and likely of planting season as well. is corn. Some suggestions I would like to make. Its not the trail terminus, but Union Pike is the simplest trailhead to get to if youre driving in, especially from I-70. It's a really good trail, but there are just enough shortcomings that I hesitate to put it at 5 stars, particularly compared to trails I've been on in West Virginia and Pennsylvania earlier in the year. It is a great trail but we picked a bad time to ride as it rained from Gaston till we got to Harris Chapel Church where we spent the night. These gates are rather nicely done - they look quite nice - but they require your attention in order to safely negotiate them. McGalliard Road is a more highly trafficked road crossing than most trails have, but it has an island in the center so you only need half of it to be clear at a time. This trail runs through rural Indiana, where local residents are on private wells. From the trailhead, the greenway seamlessly connects to the 3.5-mile Whitewater Gorge Trail, which heads southwest to Test Road. Im not sure if the Cardinal Greenway oversees it, but I consider it part of the Greenway. Paved and well maintained. SPENT the night at the very clean and quiet KOA IN one of their cabins. The one thing to be aware of is a couple bad spots/cracks in the pavement that could result in an ankle injury or biking issue, but this should not deter one from using the trail. To the right is a big hill. The weather was just right cool. The main reason we do this trail is it is so remote that most people do not want to drive so far to get to it, but believe me, it is worth it if you want solitude and not a lot of traffic. I rode this on a Monday from the center of Richmond to the south edge of Muncie -- 40 miles -- and back for a total of 80. You can see nice markers commemorating musicians who recorded there, including Louis Armstrong. There is some exercise equipment where the parking lot used to be. This is the best maintained trail we have ever been on. Everything else about this trail is exceptional. last summer(about 71/2 miles one way). By the way, take a look at the still intact stub of the Pennsy at the grade crossing at the nearby trailhead. Located just 90 minutes north of Indianapolis, Grant County is a quick exit off I-69 in East Central Indiana. Turn right onto S. Wheeling Pike. Very flat except some slight grades at the southern 20 miles. Take in the scenery and greenery while visiting some of the classic cool attractions Grant County is known for. Bring lots of sunscreen. RICHMOND HIGH SCHOOL - HUB ETCHISON PARKWAY Ways to StayThere are many ways to stay at our campground near Richmond, Indiana. Head east on IN 26, and travel 1.5 miles. Our grilled pound cake sundae is sweet, warm and smoky. One feature which I appreciate is that there are porta-potties spaced at each of the frequent trailheads - about one every 3 to 4 miles in this particular section. There is more variety in Richmond, but to get to most of them you will have to bike uphill! It is 10.5 more miles from the depot to Gaston; this section is quite open and there is little shade.
